We are in the last week of preparations for a concert of my compositions at Jesse Lee Memorial Methodist Church. 14 compositions. 21 Performers and a beautiful question: why do we still gather?
It's a precarious time. My role as the composer is multilayered. I am cheerleader, encouraging our performers, letting them know they are headed in the right direction, or suggesting another approach to tempo or phrasing.
I am also fierce protector of the compositions themselves, trying my best to match the ideal sound I have in my head with the results I am hearing in rehearsal. All the while, trying desperately to trust the process and be willing to let go of that perfect coming together of image and reality.
